Carrara Marble
Carrara is our go-to for natural stone, and the value is a big part of why. It gives you the look and feel of a high-end material at a price point that makes sense for most projects - making it the most cost-effective natural stone we work with.
Beyond cost, Carrara has a softness and neutrality that works in almost any kitchen. Its tones pair well with a wide range of paint colors and never feel out of place. Yes, it is porous and will develop a patina over time - but that natural aging is part of its character.
When a project calls for something more durable or more of a statement, we move in one of two directions:
Neolith Calacatta - a porcelain surface that is extremely durable with a clean, polished look that holds up over time.
Taj Mahal Quartzite - one of the most requested stones in Marin and San Francisco right now. It is warm, layered, and has a way of naturally drawing people into the kitchen.
Both options bring a stronger visual presence while keeping the overall palette grounded.
Tile That Feels Timeless
We spend a lot of time sourcing tile locally. Two vendors we work with regularly are Ceramic Tile Design in San Rafael and Tile Fever in Sausalito. For certain projects, we also make trips to the San Francisco Design Center depending on scope and budget. These local vendors consistently carry materials that fit the look we are after.
Carrara Tile - For many homes, we keep it simple: large-format Carrara for floors and smaller-scale Carrara for shower walls or accents. It keeps everything cohesive and easy to read.
Organic White Subway - A soft, cafe milk white subway tile with subtle texture adds just enough variation without feeling busy. It works well when you want a clean look with a bit more depth.
For Higher-End Bathrooms
Tumbled travertine floors - warm, natural, and grounded. This is not the travertine you remember from the nineties. Today's version has an organic, well-traveled quality that reads as genuinely expensive. The texture, the variation in tone, and the way it wears over time all point to something curated rather than dated.
Zellige tile walls - handmade Moroccan tile with natural variation in tone and surface. Zellige adds movement and texture in a way that flat tile simply cannot. It catches light differently throughout the day, making a space feel layered without adding visual complexity.
Mixing Metals the Right Way
When selecting hardware and plumbing fixtures, we mix metal finishes to create visual depth. We usually start with a strong base - black or bronze door hardware for a clean, modern feel, often from Schlage or Baldwin - then bring in warmth through unlacquered brass or aged brass for cabinet hardware and accents.
That contrast keeps a home from feeling flat and makes every detail feel intentional without overdesigning.
Plumbing That Holds Up
Polished Nickel Faucets
We have seen a lot of finishes come and go. A few years ago, black plumbing was everywhere. Now we find ourselves returning to polished nickel again and again, particularly in Marin homes where the goal is a more timeless look.
Polished nickel has a slight warmth that pairs well with brass hardware, and it does not feel tied to any specific moment in time. If it were purely about aesthetics, we would reach for unlacquered brass plumbing more often - but plumbing fixtures are a real investment, and polished nickel delivers similar warmth with more durability and flexibility over the long run.
